đź’© Sh$t Happens - be kind to yourself

You're going to make mistakes with your dog.

Sorry for the foul language, but seriously, be nicer to yourself!

You'll miss a warning sign. You'll push too far on a bad day. You'll look back and think I should have known better.

And when it happens, that voice in your head will be merciless.

Learning isn't linear.

When we live with dogs with Big Feelings, progress is often three steps forward, one step back. That's normal.

Setbacks don't erase all the hard work you've done. One rough day doesn't undo the strong foundation you've built. Your dog isn't keeping score the way you are — they've probably already forgotten about that meltdown.

Animals are remarkably resilient, even the ones that struggle.

Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend. You deserve the same kindness and patience you give others.

So if you had a hard week, take a breath. Learn what you can. Then let it go.

It's okay to have bad days. It's okay to make mistakes.

The important thing is to have a plan. Take the time to evaluate what went wrong and adjust your plan accordingly. Revisit your foundations. Focus on something easy for a few days. Remember to breathe.

You've got this.

"How many tricks does your dog know?" I ask this question a lot. It's not about the tricks themselves, it's about having a robust history of communicating with your dog - having learned things together. The more "tricks" your dog knows, the bigger your communication toolbox gets. A lot of dogs only know a couple of cues - sit, down, maybe shake a paw or stay. Imagine building a house, but you only have two or three tools - a hammer, maybe a screwdriver and a hand saw. It's going to take you a...

Runa is learning to be a truffle dog! There are three separate skills for scent detection, whether we are talking about hunting for mushroom, competing in scent detection sports, tracking, or air scenting for a lost person. Searching for the target odor Finding the source of the odor Indicating to the handler that they have found the source Each of these skills can be taught independently and need to be kept in balance. Too much emphasis put on one of the skills and our dog will false alert,...
