⚠️ Reactions are NOT the end of the world

🌟Sept 24 Free Training

Every week I hear from someone who feels crushed because their dog had a reaction.

They worry: “Did we undo all our training? Are we back at square one?”

Here’s the truth → reactions are not the end of the world. In fact, they’re part of growth.

Life is unpredictable. Surprises happen. Your dog will react sometimes—but that doesn’t erase your progress. What matters is:

  • Reactions happen less often and are smaller over time
  • You have a plan to handle them calmly
  • Both you and your dog bounce back faster

Handled well, those moments actually build resilience and confidence—for both ends of the leash.

The trap many people fall into is playing it too safe. When we stay too deep in the comfort zone, progress becomes fragile and slow. You and your dog miss out on learning coping skills and problem-solving skills.

The goal isn’t to avoid every mistake—it’s to keep them small, safe, and recoverable. Growth happens at the edge of the comfort zone, not far beyond it.

That’s why it’s so important to practice your “damage control plan” until it’s muscle memory. When you know what to do, you can stay calm, guide your dog through, and move on without the drama.

I have released a podcast episode on this topic if you would rather listen, plus keep an ear open for episodes featuring people who just like you are struggling with reactivity.

The Three Most Common Training Traps So many people get stuck trying to "fix" the behavior they can see—the barking, the lunging, the ignoring, the overreaction. They might not realize they are making a mistake in how they address it. Mistake #1: Not Knowing How to Break Things Down If your dog loses their marbles when someone comes to the door, how can we break that down? The trick isn't just in the behaviour, but in the emotions and how we ask our dogs to cope. The Relaxation Protocol is...

Happy Saturday! I joined Melissa Breau on the Fenzi Dog Sports Podcast this week to talk about intrahousehold aggression—why dogs in the same home end up in conflict, and easy games that take the stress out of the day-to-day, making real progress. 🎧 Listen Now I also gave a sneak peek at my upcoming 3 week course on teaching dogs to move away from conflict. Hey friend, I had a visitor this week—a nine-week-old working line Aussie named Gator. She came over for a few hours of socialization, and we packed a lot of learning into some very short play sessions. I started some patterns and structure for self control and arousal management without doing obedience drills. A few highlights: Toy trading — Prevent keep-away games and resource guarding before they start, and build a foundation for recall away from dogs and prey animals. Sit for the toy —...
