đź’ĄLiving in the trenches

Did you know that I didn't grow up with dogs? I grew up with cats, then rabbits, and horses I borrowed on weekends. I actually ran my own rabbit rescue as a teen where I clicker trained them, leash trained them, and found them homes. My nickname was Christopher Robbin!

I didn't get my first dog until I was 17. Kona was an abused little peskimo who through a series of strange events, ended up as my first dog. (Thanks Julie!)

Kona was reactive. She was particularly afraid of men, children, and friendly dogs. I knew nothing of course, being a teenager with my first dog. Kona bit (nipped?) many people while I was learning how to help her.

My little puppy mill dog actually made it to 3 weeks shy of 19 years old! Just because I found it while I was looking for pictures of her, here's a video of her at 18.5 going for a run with my dad ❤️

Anyways - why am I telling you this?

Because I've been there. Many other people are living with challenging dogs too. You are not alone.

Once I learned how to help Kona, I started my own dog rescue, taking spitz who needed behavioral work. I eventually ended up with Buck - a truly dangerous dog and had to learn a whole lot more about training and living with an aggressive dog.

I have owned 11 dogs, but just mentioning the reactive ones, next came Maxi who you will hear about in the webinar on Wednesday, then Ramses my Mexican, Riker my SPCA seizure dog, and Jubilee my medically challenging purebred. All of these dogs have had serious behaviour and aggression challenges.

So I really have been there. I've lived in the trenches. I get the anxiety, the frustration, the fear, the envy when you see people with "normal" dogs just going about their lives. It's hard.

I care just as much about my human students as I do about your dogs. I want your life to be easier and I want your dog's live to to be easier.

If you are struggling and have questions, I hope to see you at the Webinar on Weds, but always know that you can reach out for empathetic and judgement-free help.

Welcome to the first of the 2016 podcast episodes! Will your puppy or young dog just grow out of reactivity? Not usually! Many times I get called out to help with a dog who is absolutely great... except for this one thing. The pooch might: Attack other dogs when they play together Bark uncontrollably when men come into the house Lose their marbles if someone has a ball or stick or any type of food. Not like little dogs Not come when called ... insert behaviour challenge People try and try, but they just can't fix this ONE thing! Usually, the reason nothing seems to work, no matter how hard they try, is that the...
